Saint George’s Wooden Church, belonging to the former Lipovăţ Monastery (Zografu, Zugravii), Lipovăţ village, Lipovăţ commune, Vaslui County (code LMI 2004: VS-II-m-A-06852)

 

                  

Founded by the chancellor Vasile Lupu, around 1626, on the site of other church patronized by the Dormition of the Mother of God, attributed to Stephan the Great, and restored before 1717 by the monk community. Subordinated to the Zografu monastery in Athos, it is also known by the name of Zografu (Zugravii, Zugrafii). The monastery was disestablished after the confiscation of its property in 1863, and the church became a cemetery chapel, function still served today. In 1925, the clapboarding was replaced by sheet metal and daubed with clay in the interior.

 

It distinguishes by planimetry, harmony of volumes, vaulting system and the unity of its background.

 

Three-apse church, with lateral three-side apses and pentagonal detached altar apse. Porch to the west, supported on fascicular pillars, braced beam, the same as those between the nave and narthex. It is built of horizontal beam wreaths, on a stone plinth. Pyramidal tower roof, supported on cantilevers carved in steps, with long eaves, sunken with beams arranged into steps. The facades are surrounded by two girdles carved with the twisted rope motif (“torsadă”), and the portal is decorated in solar motifs. The interior is covered by an octagonal-section vault, with twisted ribs supported on retracting cantilevers and fascicular columns. Semi-calottes with simple ribs on the altar.

 

It shelters an iconostasis dating from the 17th – 18th centuries. The old book collection is stored at the Huşi Diocesan Museum.
