The Church of Saint Martyr Gheorghe from Covurlui Village;
Leova District, Covurlui Village.
This Church is built of wood, dated from 1805, closed in 1959 and reopened in 1989. We hereby mention that in the Republic of Moldavia there are only 7 wooden churches left. The elders state that it was built by the Turkish but it still preserves the old tradition of Romanian art even in the 21st century.
In the 1930s of the 20th century, priest Iacoban, who has come from Romania, pastorate the church. In 1935, under the pastorate of priest Iacoban, there was a capital repair of the church. During priest Calistrat (1950 ), the threshold was built of stone brought from Cărpineni, and also the parish house and the belfry tower. In 1989, in July, the church was reopened. Nothing changed in 30 years. As it had been closed on Easter’s Eve, it was found in the same condition at the reopening, as if time had stopped. During 1989-93 the vicar of the church was Garbuz Firapond. Starting with 1994 , priest Cozma Petreanu rules the parish. In 1995 there was a capital mending, enforcing the central walls with acacia pillars. On the interior, the older icons were renewed in paint and the walls and the vault were also painted.
The church is composed of four parts: the Altar, the Canter of the church – where sir the church-goers, the Pew – the place of the Chorus, the Threshold (in the middle) and the Proskomede Table where the holly presents are kept. The iconostasis that separates the Altar from the Pew, is painted and decorated with icons. In the centre of the Iconostasis the are the Holly Doors that bear above them the icon of the “Secret Dinner” and the icon of Saint Serafim. In front of the Iconostasis there are three candlesticks near the icons of Saint Nicholas, of Mother of God and of Jesus.
In the canter of the church there is the icon of Saint Martyr George, with a small table where the church-goers usually put flowers. The centre of the church is separated from the Altar by two vaulted icons, on the left there if the Icon of All Degusted and the Icon of Jesus Christ on the right. In the Threshold there is an older icon of Saint Varvara, as well as more recent icons.
