Cultural-Religious Itineraries: Vaslui-Hancesti-Leova
“Few places are as dearly known to me as this land of Vaslui, a land that does not belong to the mountain, nor to the plane, being unique in its beauty.” (Nicolae Iorga)
Although it figures among the few counties from Romania without natural resources, Vaslui County possesses another kind of wealth. Located in the Moldavian Tableland, in a beautiful area with soft hills and fertile planes, Vaslui County has a perfect land for agriculture. It is true that it cannot proud itself with spectacular landscapes like those of The Valley of Prahova, North Moldavia or the seaside, but Vaslui County holds unconventional touristic attractions, for example magnificent churches, old monasteries made of wood, picturesque villages where the old popular customs are well preserved and still practiced or where one can participate to the rural household works side by side with the villagers. The leaf-bearing forests (especially the oak ones where hunting parties can be organized), the waterholes, the lakes rich in fish, the landscape too, all these can become attractive perspectives for the tourists eager to see genuine places bearing a drop of archaic odour.
To all those who cross our threshold, we say welcome and we repeat to them the words of our great historian Nicolae Iorga, words that open this piece of work, hoping that they will eventually see the truth lying in them.
Ing. Vasile MIHALACHI
Chairman of Vaslui County Council
Situated in the eastern part of Romania, at the border of the European Union with the Moldavian Republic, Vaslui County should also put in value its cultural – monumental potential which is not to be neglected for its history and authenticity. The historical monuments, either archeological sites from different centuries or traces of former medieval strongholds, or wooden or brick churches, buildings with special architectural age and value, all together, represent the most expensive treasures of today’s Vaslui.
The present work is a selective presentation of the most representative proofs of Orthodox architecture and spirituality from the Diocese of Huşi. Founded all along the time, the churches and monasteries (the 15th and 19th century) from this geographic area emphasize the capacity to create and the contribution of our ancestors to the enrichment of the Romanian culture and civilization, especially the churches of wood which represent real thesaurus of technical civilization and artistic expressivity and which add themselves with their personal print to the national and European area of values.
We would like this guide to promote the churches and monasteries from our county as touristy attraction points, to be a work with accessible popularity aimed both to specialists and to the wide public who are interested to discover and keep the authenticity of religious places. Everyone should be pleased that they have transitory inherited these cultural values and be aware of their complementarities to the European culture. Besides its character of specialty, our elaboration has the intention to contribute to the forming of a receptive and active audience – a direct participant to the conservation of historic monuments through measures of protection and restoration.
The succinct text (based on a short historic presentation and the description of each of the selected monuments) and ensemble or in detail images come to emphasize the importance of these values of Christian architectural patrimony from our county and implicitly from Romania. Within the text there are also mentioned the settings that may provide food and accommodation. The source of the data represents the research in the field, the specialty bibliography and at last the evidence folders drawn up by our regretted colleague, Doina Rotaru (1952-2005), a former museographer at Vaslui County “Stefan cel Mare” Museum, to whom we hereby bring our kind pious homage. Also, we would Highness Ioachim, Husbishop, for understanding such an initiative, also to Mrs Ina Postavaru and MrsAdriana Stroe, art historics, from the National Institute of Historical Monuments for their technical support.
