The „Dormition of the Virgin Mary Lordly Church, Bârlad Town, str. Victoriei, nr. 1, Vaslui County (code LMI 2004: VS-II-m-A-06762)

It was built in the 17th century (c. 1636) by Vasile Lupu  – Voivode of Moldavia on the terrain of a church attributed to Stephan the Great (in the 15th century). Damaged by earthquakes, the church was totally rebuilt from the bases between 1804 and 1827 and then it was rebuilt from the level of the windows during 1840-1842 when the threshold was also added and so was the pontifical place in 1867. Between 1938 and 1943 the present bell tower which is now remade was built on the stoop while the interior paintings were repainted by Gh. Teodorescu-Argeş using the technique in oil; the paintings were afterwards cleaned and completed in 1965.

Between 1803 and 1860, in the cells around the church, there functioned a school in Moldavian and in Greek languages. Constantin Codrescu, the director of the first hospital named “Bârlad and Elena Beldiman” from Bârlad during 1866 and 1891. Between 1870 and 1919 there functioned a school for church singers which was founded again in 1934.

The church is in rectangular plan, with unhooked semicircular apse of the altar and a bell tower in the west (initially with three steeples). It is built of brick on stone base with a roof in four layers covered with copper sheet initially of shingle. On the interior, it is covered with semi-domes in the apse of the altar, with domes on the pendants in the aisle and semicircular nope in the pro-aisle. The architectural appearance of neoclassic inspiration is made of rectangular panels, carry, backing moulds under the perch, windows and blind windows with openings in plain arch bond.  The three leveled bell tower of square section and hexagonal drum has the same décor as the church.

During the 18th – 19th centuries the church benefited from different lordly priviledges. There could also be added the donations made by the parish (boyars, trademen, wisemen etc.), consisting of real estate goods (terrains, shops, houses) and mobile goods (icons on wood, cult silvery, religious books with notes from the donators), some of them having resisted until today.
